Genesis 7
1
And Yahweh said to Noah, “Come in, thou and all thy house, unto the ark, in that thee I have seen righteous before my face in this generation.
2
From every pure beast take thou to thee seven, seven: the man and his woman;1 and from the beast that is not pure, it two: the man and his woman;
3
also from the flier of the heavens seven, seven: male and female, to keep alive seed upon the face of all the land.

the man and his woman. Hebrew has words for “male” and “female;” these are used in the next verse. Here it uses the word for “man” (ish) and for “woman” (ishah). That this delightful phrasing is universally elided in English Bibles speaks ill of the utter funless self-seriousness of Bible translators. ↩
