Genesis 22
1
And it came to be, after these things, and God tested Abraham, and said unto him, “Abraham,” and he said, “Lo, I am here.”
2
And he said, “Take, pray, thy son, thine only that thou lovest, and go thee unto the land of Moriah and make him ascend there for an ascension upon one of the mountains that I say unto thee.”
3
And Abraham shouldered up in the morning and he saddled his donkey and he took two of his lads with him and Isaac his son and he rived the ascension wood and he rose and he went unto the place that God had said to him.
4
In the third day, and Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw him the place from afar,
5
and Abraham said unto his lads, “Dwell by yourselves here with the donkey, and I and the lad shall go until thus, and we will prostrate, and turn back unto you.”
6
And Abraham took the ascension wood and set it upon Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the eating-knife, and they went both of them together.
7
And Isaac said unto Abraham his father, and said, “My father.” And he said, “Lo, I am here my son.” And he said, “Lo, the fire and the wood, and where is the lamb of ascension?”
8
And Abraham said, “God himself will see to the lamb of ascension my son,” and they went both of them together.
9
And they came unto the place that God had said to him, and Abraham built there an altar and arrayed him the wood and bound him Isaac his son and set him upon the altar from above the wood,
10
and Abraham sent forth his hand and took the eating-knife for to slaughter his son,
11
and the angel of Yahweh called unto him from the heavens and he said, “Abraham, Abraham,” and he said, “Lo, I am here,”
12
and he said, “Send not forth thine hand unto the lad and do thou not anything to him, in that now I know that thou art a fearer of God, and thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only, from me.”
13
And Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw, and lo, a ram behind him, being held in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and made him ascend for an ascension instead of his son,
14
and Abraham called the name of that place Yahweh Yireh;1 that it is said to this day, “In the mount of Yahweh it shall be seen to.”2
15
And the angel of Yahweh called unto Abraham a second time from the heavens,
16
and he said, “By me have I sworn”—an utterance of Yahweh—“in that because thou hast done this thing and hast not withheld thou thy son, thine only,
17
that blessing I shall bless thee, and multiplying I shall multiply thy seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand that is upon the lip of the sea, and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies,
18
and in thy seed shall be blessed all the nations of the land, because that thou hast hearkened to my voice.”
